Growing tomatoes

We've had enough of the flavourless tomatoes in the supermarkets so have decided to grown some on our little balcony. To keep things easy, we'll start with cherry tomatoes.

Other than in far off N.T., can anyone suggest where to buy the necessary items, e.g. tomato-specific growing bags, seeds (Gardener's Delight), etc.?

Thanks,

good plan - I was thinking of attempting to grow herbs/tomatoes on our balcony but wasnt sure whether they would stand up to the elements.

B&Q has a gardening section at megabox, other than that no too sure

Cheers D&H, but the B&Q gardening section, when we saw it in Mar/Apr, was woefully limited in its products. Let's hope someone knows the place to go.

Have you tried the flower market? I've bought a lot of herbs there and they have seeds for almost everything...

I'm sorry, the only thing that I remember is that they weren't organic seeds, and so that's why I didn't buy them. And also because last time I grew tomatoes, the birds ate them all!!!

You can use chicken wire to keep the birds off your plants. If you go down to Des Voeux Road West in Sheung Wan, you can get some high P bat guano that is excellent for fruiting tomato plants and is organic to boot. They also carry a selection of seeds there, but I don't know if they'll have ones for cherry tomatoes.

Tomatoes will do well here as long as they get lots of light and air flow, since the humidity can cause mold and rot.
