How does private messaging system work in this site?

1. Send a message
2. It appears in my Sent folder

is this message being held in my Sent (is this outbox or really sent box?) till the other party reads it or is it like in email, the moment I send it appears in recipient's mailbox? Will my deleting Sent folder content affect the delivery in any way?

Deleting your sent folder will not affect the recipient's inbox. Its a copy of the message you sent.
