HKID (with ROA) holder seeking dual citizenship

Dear all,

I was born in HK before 1997 and I have a HKID (with ROA). I have a Mauritian passport and so does my mother. My father has an Indian passport.

My questions are:

1) Am I entitled to a HKSAR passport?

2) If so, is there any way I can get a HKSAR passport without having to renounce my Mauritian passport? I understand that China does not recognise dual nationality, but since the key word is "recognise" and not "forbid", what can I do to get the HKSAR passport and still keep my Mauritian passport?

Thank you very much for all your help!

1) Are you a Chinese citizen? That is, if you are of "Chinese blood" born in HK (that's really what it says!) Being born in HK does not necessarily mean you're Chinese. If yes, then you can get a HKSAR passport.

2) If you were born Chinese, and you subsequently got other citizenships, that is ok for the purposes of Hong Kong. But if you aren't Chinese, then you'd have to renounce the other citizenships to become Chinese, to get a HKSAR passport.

1) There are many people in Hong Kong not of Chinese descent who have HK SAR passports. Most of them are from South Asian families that immigrated to HK several generations ago. So Chinese blood is no longer an absolute requirement. If you speak Cantonese it will help.

2) As part of taking Chinese citizenship it is required that you renounce all your other citizenships. However, once you are a Chinese Citizen there is no requirement to renounce it if you subsequently take or resume another citizenship. So you would need to renounce your Mauritian citizenship before getting Chinese Citizenship, but, if Mauritius allows you to do so, you could retake it later without renouncing your Chinese citizenship.
