Not poor by any means - it should be close to the average household income I think.

However, keep in mind that over 50% (forget the number.. but should be close to that) of locals live in Govt housing of some sort or the younger lot live with family and do not have to pay the rents most expats have to pay.

Totally depends on who you are talking about. I would say 20k for a local is around average. For an expat it is at the very bottom end of the scale.

Hmm ... i was not from HK actually meant I am not local.

I been offer to work in HK and the employer request me to give him my expectation ...

my work responsibility is in charge in the IT, and the company not really a IT company. They doing other kind of business.

I hope I won't too low from the HK market salary range.

I think you need to be more specific, but I would say that if you not from HK and need a work visa (ie specialist and no locals available to do job) then 20k is very low for this field.

Usual requirements if you need a work visa. 20k might be the usual salary for a local doing the job. However, supposedly for a work visa the employer needs to show that there are no HK citizens qualified/experienced to fill the position.

If visa no issue then the only really important thing about salary is whether you are willing to work for that amount. What others earn is irrelevant.

20k is enough to live comfortably on here, if you are flexible on size and location of accomodation,

To be pedantic, the employer has to show that there are no HK Permanent Residents qualified...

You need to talk to someone who works in recruitment. I don't think you can rely on a site like this for advice on wages especially without giving specifics. $20k for an expat sounds low to me. HK is expensive. you need to get the number right.

Hi SpecialK,

If 20K with some other additional allowance such as house allowance?

leghk,

I think the work visa is the employer issue on how they show to the HK gov, on my site i have no issue i just either take the offer or just leave it.

=====
i understand the living standard in HK is very high, but just cannot imagine how high or expensive it would be. Example in Msia, I think just only RM1500 you can have a medium food and one or two times happy hours, also with some petrol pump. Thats no included the house rent and other expenses.

I think on RM1500 convert to HK dollar is around HK3K, but due to living standard is high so need to time 3 times? so HK$9K per month for just normal expenses? Wonder 9K just for monthly expenses for a ppl living in HK, is it above average or just very low and poor condition?
