Hi please help - My husband has just seured a job in Hong Kong and we need a school place for our daughter who will be going into year 1 in August of this year. Which school is our best bet for getting her a place as I have emailed all the ESF schools and they seem to be full with huge waiting lists. The company will pay any school fees so they are luckily not a problem. Please help as this could be a deal breaker if we cant get her a place?

No real way around it. Some schools may accept a kid based on buying a school debenture. When I came out here, my wife and kids joined a year later due to waitlists. Both kids are now in ESF. I know some others who got in as soon as they arrived - but usually not in year 1 or year 7.

Bottom line - you will do what is necessary, if it is important to make the move.

ESF waiting lists can be misleading, as a lot of parents apply to multiple schools and make the decisions at the last moment.

Thanks for that, I saw one school - cant remember which- basically implied that if you give them £20,000
your child would get 'fastracked' this is over and above the school fees........Will have to update hubby when he gets home - bit worrying this one. Thanks a lot for replying its much appreciated.

Do you think we would get her in if we move over without securing a place. We are meant to be moving over Mid-July bang in the middle of the school hols and so schools will be shut to look at places available. Feeling ultra stressed already and we havent even booked the plane tickets ):

We got a place at Delia School of Canada, though not year 1, at very short notice. There was a short waiting list but they squeezed my daughter in. No request for debentures. Its in Tai Koo, Hong Kong Island.

Would also recommend that you get the HR department to do a little bit of leg work. If your husband works for one of the larger companies who move lots of people in and out of the region, they might have some arrangements.

its a lovely school in the New Territories - 40 mins drive to town, 15 mins to sha tin, 20 to Kowloon Tong - great school community
has a field and looks out onto mountains. about 350 children (2form entry)

they have vacancies for some year groups - be worth giving them a call
