Dress code-Hong Kong

Hi

I'll be interning in Hong Kong for a financial advisory firm starting in June. They said the dress code is business casaul. Does that mean I can wear cropped pants, skirts, short sleeved shirts, etc.. I'm not too familiar with the HK business enviornment, so any tips will be great.

Thanks!

not sure about crop pants but skirts are fine

but you might want to avoid short sleeved tops as you will freeze in summer. In my view it's much more formal than places like Australia, for example, but possible similar to UK styles.

if you are in an office, the locals seem to be more on the business than on the casual.

i would say no to the cropped trousers and as for the short sleeved t-shirts, no too....a blouse ok. but you would need a light jumper/sweater for the air-con. then you can remove it when you leave the building. i would stick with nice trousers or skirts and blouses.

best bet, start out working wearing a suit (if you are a guy). get a feel for what others do in the office, and then decide how casual you can get (away with).

As mentioned, err on the side of caution initially, then just dress down to fit. I didn't think that 'cropped pants' counted as female business casual anywhere in the world... with the possible exception of Bermuda

Heh, funny you should mention Bermuda.

I've had video con's with people in these islands and when they are leaving the video conference, you see them getting up and they are wearing shorts!!

i kid you not.

Yeah, I also know people who've worked there. I really wish the Brits introduced shorts as business clothing when they used to run HK. Sure, the long socks look daggy, but it would make the summers so much more bearable.
