Finding Employment in Hong Kong Hi, I have recently settled in Hong Kong after being married to a local girl, and have finally received my HK ID allowing me to live and work here. I am looking for employment opportunities here. My previous employment was in banking in Australia, and although I don't have any local language skills or tertiary qualifications, I do have over 15 years in sales and management in the banking area. While I have been looking at the classifieds and sending resumes to employment agencies, I am still waiting for any real responses. I want to start networking, and am looking for some guidance as to where I may be able to go to meet the right people who may be able to provide some assistance to me. Any comments that can be provided will be appreciated. Thanks.

Would recommend you look at Wall Street Associates. They do a fair amount of expat placement. http://www.wallstreet.com.hk/

Thanks, I've sent a copy of my resume to them already. Just waiting a few days before I make a follow up call. I am also wondering if there are any places that banking people(the ones that may be able to help) hang around. Thanks for your response.

If you can find someone that you know in the banking industry, senior enough to get access to the Bankers Club. Thats the place to network. Look for various country specific gatherings -- the Australians have a "sundowners gathering" which is always a good place to meet and network. ( http://www.australia.org.hk/events_calendar.htm )

To clarify my previous comment, being new to Hong Kong, obviously I don't know too many people, and from both a social and professional perspective, I am interested in meeting new people here.

To AlexJ I have a very similar situation with you except I am relocating to HK because my fiancee is a HK native. Anyway, I am an AICPA originally from New York. I think you should try to send your resumes to those international investments banks. ANother agent you should look for is Ambition. Ambition agents specialize in banking and finance. give it a shot.

Thanks Whong Actually, I am finding that the best way for me at the moment is to get out and network. I have joined a few associations, been to a few functions and met some people in the relevant industries.( Never a shortage of other Aussies looking for a chat over a few drinks.) Haven't got a as job yet, but a lot more positive because I am actually getting to talk to people face to face, and getting through without having to worry about the screeners. Plus thinking things will pick up a bit after Chinese new year.
