Where, exactly is the "R" on your HKID?

Is it below your date of birth, probably next to an "O"?

Or is it the first character in your HKID number (like R123456(7))?

Answering my own question... I see from this post that you, Chicagolife, are in HK on a Employment Visa.

In that case there is absolutely no doubt. You need your passport to go to Macau.

Know its and old thread but scanned thru and still seems like theres some confusion, so I'll add in as Im in the middle:

Just went to Macau and no probs getting in and out purely on HKID with RO (under my DOB)

I.e. I have an HKID but NOT a permanent resident. I only have right of abode& right to land so am ALSO NOT temporary/conditional HKID.

Perhaps my level (2 star?) ID is the cutoff point for use for Macau?

Er, no - you have Right To Land (that's what the R in RO means). You do not have Right Of Abode (if you did you would be AO).

3-star refers to the *** on (broadly) Chinese citizens' HKID cards. For such citizens between the age of 12 and 18 they have * instead.

There is no such thing as a 2-star HKID.

The condition for Macau entry solely on a HKID as I understand it is either Right To Land or Right of Abode. It may be also that people with Unconditional Stay (who would be UO) can also. I believe KIA is one of those so maybe he can confirm.

Why don't you just bring your passport the next time you go to Macau, but try using only your HKID? Then tell us if it worked.

(Presumably you have your passport back by now).

The post two above yours from Samquade states that he had no problem going in and out of Macau solely with an RO HKID.

My husband tried to enter Macau with his HKID and he was deported back to HK. I would take a passport if I were you.

He has right to land. He was told beforehand that he didn't need a passport but was refused entry when he arrived.
