Photography gigs in HK later this year?

Hi everyone. I haven't posted here much since I was in HK last year as an exchange student. I loved it there and I plan to have a little vacation near the end of the year. I do freelance photography and was wondering if anyone could use a photographer or know any people or places who'd be hiring. It would really help with the flight costs and I would visit for sure if I can land a few gigs.

I'm an ABC, speak English fluently and some Cantonese. I do have a HK ID card so I don't think there are any legal issues I'd have to deal with (here's hoping). I have experience shooting parties/events, portraits and model portfolios. Everything is shot digitally and put on CD immediately after the shoot.

Sorry if this sounds like an ad... but it should be ok posting this here, right? I appreciate any help or referrals and I'll take you out for dinner for any help.

Do you know how many freelance photographers are available in Hong Kong? Many of whom are willing to shoot for next to nothing just to get experience...It may be a tough gig to find, good luck.

You can join the Hong Kong Institute of Professional Photographers, the site will also give you an idea of what the competition is like:

climber07: Yeah I know... I remember when I went last year I noticed in general there were tons of people with digital SLRs... even if they just use them for snapshots. I don't know why... I guess everyone just has too much money. :P

dipper: Thanks for the link. I'll definitely check that out. I know in general there are lots of photo and camera enthusiasts in HK but it doesn't mean they actually know how to use the gear, isn't that right? I'm sure the photographers with that institute are experienced pros so I will definitely check them out. Thanks again!

That depends on what type of HKID card you have (or what type of visa if your HKID is not one conferring RIght of Abode or Right to Land).

Jedi- try getting in touch with some of the event organising companies in HK.

Are you good? As Climber pointed out, there are huge numbers of really budget ($1-2000 a night) event photographers, but they tend to really suck. If you've got a good, easily accessed portfolio and you're presentable, that'd be a good start.

In my previous company we did a big 5 star event and used a volunteer photographer who wanted the experience and to add to his portfolio. He turned out to be really good and snapped some awesome shots.
What do you say to that Climber?!

PDLM: I have the Ride to Land type. When I was getting it last year I remember them saying that I wouldn't be considered a permanent resident but I could legally work. Is that right or did I get the wrong info?

jgl: Thanks for the suggestion. Which are some of the event org companies in HK? I have experience shooting various types of events including weddings, conventions, private parties and bars/clubs. I'm still working on my website so I should have an easily accessible port online very soon.

Lammarite: Yeah, I started out photographing at the local clubs during college for free as well. It was great practice. How is that volunteer photographer doing these days? I hope he's still around...

With Right to Land you are legal to do whatever work you want., so no problem.
