Unreported World: China's Olympic Lie

I came across this investigative journalism video by British reporters called "Unreported World: China's Olympic Lie" on the popular HK Chinese language forum (discuss.com.hk).

After watching it, I think the stories about Beijingers resisting forced evictions, relocations and the "black jails" provides more info on what has been happening in the city hosting the 2008 Olympics. There is a lot of debate on the Chinese forums, based in HK. None here.

This kind of "news" is not new. Injustices go on everywhere, not just in the PRC. But when the PRC police actively help to silence those who fight the bullys linked to local authorities and their hired hands, it's more than an eye-opener!

This type of video may not be accessible in the PRC.

Info about the video
Reporter Aidan Hartley and producer Andrew Carter investigate alleged human rights abuses in China, including footage of the "black jails" the
government more...denies exist. They discover the plight of those fighting against eviction from their homes to make way for Olympic infrastructure, with a policy of radical urban development leading to 1.5million people being forcibly relocated

This is well documented by COHRE (Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions):
http://www.cohre.org/store/attachmen...0Violators.pdf

They have said that 400,000 people have been evicted due to the Olympic Games, plust 3.7 million in the past decade due to other factors.

It is an absolute disgrace.

The people in this orgisation are banned from entering China (and have been for years). But, China will continue on. We can only hope that the Hong Kong government keep their "open borders" policy, despite turning away several people from HKIA and detaining several demostrators at the Olympic Torch Relay "for their own protection".

Interesting times.

I heard some of the things in the COHRE document years before. Thanks for reminding me of the other injustices by many other countries.

You mention HKSAR government's "open borders" policy. Agree, let's hope it continues.

Earlier I said there was a lot of "debate" about the forced evictions and relocations in the PRC on Chinese language discussion forums. I should have said noisy "shouting matches", not "debate".

Many Chinese replies are saying the video report is more clever propaganda by Westerners who hire a group of 20 Beijingers to act, complain, to lie about beatings by authorities etc... that it is "fake! fake!" and "too CNN". Then there is a lot of swearing at original poster of the "propaganda" because of patriotic feelings now.

The 30 min video is by British Channel 4's prog. "Unreported World". But many Chinese feel that Western media is always against them. It is difficult to say anything because, yes, it is/can be true too.
