Wink Looking to work in Hong Kong....(only speak English)

Hi there.

I am going to be moving to Hong Kong (from Canada) in about 6 months with my husband. I would like to find out if it will be difficult for me to get a job in Hong Kong. I don't speak any Cantonese at all, only English. I am currently in advertising sales for a National magazine in Canada. Been in sales for over 8 years but am looking for a bit of a change in career. I am very interested in Event Planning. Is it a longshot for me to try and get a job in that field? If so, are there any other job ideas that you can share that may be a bit easier for me to get into. Except for TEFL, not too interested in being a teacher.

Your suggestions and words of advice are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
K

looking for a job: meeting new people

Hi there,

i can advise you to meet a lot of new people and tell what you are looking for kind of job. I am member of BNI, a network for business owners and professionals. You can always visit one of the meetings and you will never know if you find someone who can help you finding a job.

If you are in HK and interested to meet one of our weekly meetings, just let me know.

Rose

Shouldn't be a problem. I been working in events in Hong Kong for the last two years, and my Cantonese is limited to bad language and giving directions to taxi drivers.

Depends what role you want, but I know producers, technical, creative and accounts people in the HK and Asia event industry that speak no Chinese. Of course, it's an advantage, but not a must!

Good luck and welcome to HK!
