and history has proved that ignoring and tolerating what happens in these' remote countries'means it will one day happen closer to home....

Having been involved in many demonstrations in my youth and arrested seven times I really can not see the difference between here and the UK. You try marching in support of the Irish Nationalists in the UK and the treatment you receive is just a tiny bit more aggressive.

I note though that the THES rankings of the top 400 universities in the world include 20 in Australia (as well as my Alma Mater at 2nd equal). Surprisingly I seem unable to locate the University of Canberra on the list.

I didn't mean my comment to denigrate the run or make a political comment on HK and China. I understand the fear of organizers as the kind of idiots protesting around the world have actually attacked the torch carriers.

In Vancouver for its 2010 countdown clock unveiling they had masked thugs take over the stage and push the speaker aside. All these things plus the constant threat of terrorists are causing events like this to separate the participants from the crowds. This is a sad commentary on our times - not knocking the organizers.

You think people get close to the President of the United States? No. I used to be in Washington DC a fair amount during Clinton's second term and one day while walking by George Washington University I came upon the President there . Above me on the roof tops were armed guards. Street shut down, crowd way back. A canopy was in place from the door of the building to his car so people couldn't get a glimpse of him. You can only see him up close on TV. You can get close to the PM of Canada but even now it is heavily controlled due to the times we live in.

In Canada, and BC in particular, one of the highest honours given to any group is either the Vancouver Police motorcycle team or the less famous RCMP motorcycle group. The crowds love them. When England played Canada at Swanguard Stadium the RCMP motorcycle team escorted that team from hotel to the Stadium. The fans there early and the folks on the street loved it.

I wouldn't read too much into the gloves.

Read carefully did I claim higher educational quals or was it the liberal qualities of said educational experiences I was alluding to -how very HK to nitpick about an off the cuff comment on a forum in terms of I daresay, syntax and construction so as to obfuscate the theme of the discussion...

You can be for / against Tibet, Beijing....does not really matter...

If you really want to do something for Tibet (or for all that matter a lot of other countries/regions with similar fate..) then do something about it, waving a flag in front of a TV screen won't do much....

You want to improve the life of tibetans...that is very noble I think...so quit your job ...go there and make a difference...
