Credit Cards and Jurisdiction

What are the legal jurisdiction and / or actions that HK based issuers of credit cards can do to their customers if you end up defaulting and leaving HK?

thanks for the reply.

couple of questions:

1) bounty hunter -- if i'm overseas, assuming that they can track me down -- even if they do, what jurisdiction do they have if anything?

2) what would/could happen do if i ever do come back to HK?

anyone else?

I am particularly interested in hearing from someone with experience in this area (perhaps a lawyer) or maybe someone who knows the ins and outs of this process.

thanks

I don't think its policy here to issue advise on someone who appears to be planning to commit an act of financial avoidance here.

If you run away owing money and the company have a judgment made in court it can be registered in Immg and when you try to come in again you will be noticed. A recent posting revealed someone who had a tax issue and he was let in but NOT allowed to leave. This maybe policy to let you in ( to settle your affairs ? ) but not go out until they are and the notice removed.

No lawyer here is going to entertain someone wanting to run up his card and then leg it. Knowing that, is an accessory charge.

Boris,

Thanks for the reply.

I understand your concern. Let me clarify the situation so that there isn't any confusion.

I worked in HK for a couple of years and have now left. I have some legacy credit cards that were issued in HK.

If those cards end up defaulting, what is the worst thing that can happen? That's really what I wanted to get my head around.

Of course I know that there could be legal issues if I ever go back to HK and of course there would be serious issues with regards to ever trying to get credit in HK again.

Aside from that, I was wondering if there is anything that these companies can do to me legally if I've already left?

"If those cards end up defaulting, what is the worst thing that can happen? That's really what I wanted to get my head around. "

Why would cards issued years ago end up defaulting if you had paid the balances when due? Seems a sort of circular problem.

If you left HK and they where HK based cards surely they would have either time expired or you would have canceled them.

If your still using them then the statement should be going to you and / or your paying the balance. So--- still a big Y question in my head.

Pay 'em, Cancel 'em, Job done.

They still have outstanding balances on them, I have been paying the monthly minimum payments to keep them active.

I guess I was wondering if I don't pay it off, what's the worst thing they can do to me if I am out of their jurisdiction now?

jimmy, you could be out of luck getting advice on this here. Geoexpat members are the most law-abiding bunch of people on the planet.

Claire - I think self-righteous is perhaps more appropriate.

The worst case scenario - well, depending on the amount, the default is reported to a credit agency that operates across borders. There are also agencies that will collect international debt.
