south pacific islands

hi all--

i am going to be in hawaii for a conference this summer, and was hoping to make a south pacific island stop before coming back here. can anyone recommend somewhere to go between honolulu and hong kong that will not be too expensive or too touristy? thanks so much!!

Er, the South Pacific islands (I assume you mean Fiji or Samoa or similar) are hardly en route between here and Hawaii, which is on more or less the same latitude, 21-22 degrees north as Hong Kong, whereas the South Pacific Islands are about 20 degrees south of the equator. The normal route to and from Hawaii from here is via Tokyo, and you would probably have to go via Australia (or continental USA) to get to the south Pacific islands, so it isn't going to be cheap.

Continental to Guam

although this is still not south pacific it is imho the only feasible way to fly with a stopover that gets you anyway near to pacific islands. used to be two flights a week Mon & Thurs

Would have to agree with the two prior answers. Guam is an option, although Tokyo/Japn would be good if you haven't done it before (or even South Korea) - okay, they are probably expensive and touristy. You can also fly via Manila to Honolulu.

The South Pacific is probably not your best solution for an easy stopover - a browse through google earth might help you get an idea of the distances involved.

Guam isn't a very interesting place to visit; hardly worth it really. Quite possibly one of the ugliest islands of the South Pac.
