Deducted pay for sick leave?

I am a part time teacher working at a learning centre. I do not have a contract and am not expecting any sick pay, but my employers have threatened to deduct (!?) money from my pay cheque for their loss of earnings for that day. They are saying that this is because I did not give them 24 hrs notice, and could not inform the parents the previous day. This seems ludicrous to me. I did not know 24 hrs ago that I was going to get sick. Anyone else encountered this in HK? All advice appreciated.

HKNewBi has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Do you have a contract that states this anywhere?

If they are running a teaching business they surely would have some back up in case anyone was taken ill - or how can they provide a reliable service to their customers.

Be firm but pleasant, state you disagree as logistically this isn't a reasonable demand and suggest perhaps you agree to disagree and both speak with the labour department. They probably don't want the hassle and probably have staff without valid work permits - sounds like that sort of outfit.

Just remember to be as emotionless as possible or you may find yourself out of a job with them.

absolutely ridiculous! as you don't have a contract though, neither of you are covered. they can pretty much do whatever they please. as can you...you don't have to go back again, if you don't want to.

You say you don't have a contract; would I be right in guessing that you don't have a visa either?

Well in that case you're just daft for doing any regular work without a contract. I guess the centre is breaking the law by not paying MPF, and they probably won't put a tax return in for you.

But then again I guess you weren't planning on declaring the income either.

And the MPF? The M stands for Mandatory.
