HK stamps would kill off a passport in no time.
I am dreading being told they can no longer add pages to my passport. Which, much like the current China visa situation, seems to be a random decision made by the guy at the counter.

My husband plans to travel across the border every day when we move out there. We hope to live in Tai Po area. Is this not advisable? I'm getting worried now.

It is easy enough to do, assuming you are headed to Lo Wu area. The Chinese stamps will eat up your passport pages though.
