Hong Kong SAR is split into 4 main areas
Hong Kong Island
Kowloon
New Territories
Islands

Most people refer to Hong Kong Island as just " The Island "
Referring to the Islands ( could be confusing eh ) is either by name of the island or part of. ie Lamma , Lantau ( Discovery Bay ( DB ) is part of ).
Kowloon referred to as just that or area therein as confusingly there are several parts that have Kowloon in the title.
New Territories is shortened to N.T.

So refer away my friend

I think most people assume "Hong Kong" means the island and not Kowloon.

Disagree. I think you have to specify the island. If you say you are from Hong Kong, the next question is always "The Island?"

lionrock88 is on a distinguished road
I think it's best to drill down by saying "Hong Kong side" or "Hong Kong island."

That would be what I meant. Expats and tourists.
