Mastercard / Visa, etc can't do anything in this situation, its up to your card issuing company (i.e. HSBC, Hang Seng, etc).

As stated before, the UK has the consumer protection act, which means uk card holders are covered for such situations.

re the special fares, man are they hard to come by. Both CX and BA have been impossible to get hold off. The special BA fares have already gone. Best they can offer is one via PVG on 22 April (folks were hoping to get back on 20 April) for HK$5k per person.

Have looked into getting a cheap econ return, which works around the same price, but at least they have the correct travel dates for my parents.

HI, Vancouver victims, anyone?count me in..Just bought tickets from them last week thru their website and paid by credit card. Just in the wee hours this morning,I received a call from a family member in Hong Kong telling me about Oasis's current financial crisis. I surfed the web and found out about your forum (Thanx!) and confirmed it was not just a rumour. Didn't get much sleep actually.I I called the visa card company and the bank officer told me to send them letter requesting for a charge back and a copy of the itinerary which I already did. She said there shouldn't be a problem for the refund and since the purchase couldn't be delivered, thus they could dispute it.

I booked with CX afterwards. Absolutely more expensive but I hope no more sleepless night.

Cheers to TD Canada Trust visa!

kur0mi has pissed of a few people
I booked 3 tickets to go home to UK to visit my family in January traveling at the end of June. Managed to find tickets for just under HKD$7,500 flying the day before the originally planned date with NZ airline. But the problem is don't know whether to pay and go ahead with the deal. As to now still not sure whether anything else will happen in the next week about this crisis I don't want to be double booked! Paid the tickets with AMEX but they were unhelpful. They didn't give an answer in whether could or could not make the claim back. So useless!!!

If the Amex Card you have is a UK based charge card (where the balance has to be repaid in full every month) rather than a UK based credit card then you will not be entitled to a refund under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

I believe under this Act that you have automatic legal protection if you purchase goods or services for GBP 100.00 or more and the goods or service is defective or, as in this case, the supplier goes bust.

The Act stipulates that the credit card company is jointly responsible if the supplier goes bankrupt.

So, if you have an AMEX credit card you are covered. If a charge card you are not.

thanks for your reply. I asked my cousin and he said he applied his card here in HK. So that means there is no cover. Is there any policy with AMEX under these kind of situations in HK?

The credit card department at Citibank HK just told me that they have set up a special task force dealing only with Oasis customers and that they will contact me within the next two days to settle the issue. Over the phone they confirmed that the money will be refunded.

What do you expect them to do? If the bank has paid your money to Oasis and they can't get it back do you expect them to give you an equal amount of money out of charity? Should all the other investors in the bank who choose to spend their money with more reliable vendors then have to pay higher fees to the bank so that the bank can continue to compensate you for your future purchasing errors?

Why should buying with a credit card be any different from buying with cash? Do you sonmehow expect people who paid for Oasis tickets with cash to get refunds? If so, from whom? And if not then why should paying with a credit card make you any different?

If you want insurance against this sort of thing happening then it's up to you to buy it - this is exactly what Travel Insurance is for. By not buying such insurance you are taking the risk upon yourself.
