It will depend on your nations passport policy, but in the event that you replace your existing passport with a new one, the old one is cancelled and a new one is issued with a new passport number. Very likely with the latest E-Passports that are now being issued post 911.

Your visa must be used in a valid travel document. A cancelled passport because of a replacement isn't a valid passport the moment the new one is issued. The visa corresponds to the passport number it was installed into originally, and it is not transferable to a new passport of your name, but of a different passport number.

You will need to take your new passport to the Chinese embassy and have a duplicate visa sticker inserted into your valid passport, with matching passport numbers that relate to the new passport, not the cancelled one..

Otherwise, no cigar.
Agree with Boris - above is not consistent with my experience. Visa are generally tied to the person not the travel document (although some countries might have special provisions on this). Specifically, I have used PRC (and other) visa in old/invalidated passports together with the new/current passport (sans visa and with a different passport number than the previous one) on a number of occasions.

The problem is that in the current "situation/state of affairs" they might interpret this issue very differently. Remember, according to the official comment "multiple visas continue to be issued", you just can't get them...
On a different note, a German friend of mine crossed the border twice this week on her (still valid until next year) multiple visa without any problem. She only commented that it took quite a long time at the counter to check the passports - thus the queues were very long (Lok Ma Chau).

The link provides the proof that our local media is a toothless non news affair. In one article the NYT has shown what true reporting can project. An excellent, incisive, piece that is head and shoulders above the " words on a page " stuff we have seen locally.

Thanks Climber for finding it and I particularly enjoyed the way that “The Chinese people will welcome foreign friends in a warm, enthusiastic and open-minded way,” was folded into the piece. Make you immediately think " yeah - right ! "

The French and Swiss / German fold ins where genius.

As for advertising China as a more open and modern society, their own people, who should be making it happen, are shooting themselves in the foot with the AK47 set to automatic fire. A shame really as my many friends in Qingdao and Beijing are putting the blame on foreigners because thats what they are told. Explaining to them that the " Blue Trackie Army " is making the whole country look stupid and over controlling is met with blank expressions.

So sad to be involved in this whole issue. Even though I am no longer to be able to make the way back to shenzhen home more often, even though I have to suffer the lonely weekend in HK on my own while my family is right cross the river, I belive chinese government is doing the right thing on this matter BUT in a wrong way!

Chinese government has done a good job to show the world that they are open and ready for the global economy....They have been doing a lot of good things since they enter WTO.

However, they started to have problem when the olympics comes near. They requested our china business to stop transporting those "dengerous" chemicals in china from July to Oct "unofficially". Our team are still trying to get the "official" confirmation as it is just 2 months plus away. Our production and delivery to customer will expect to have mess up days during the olympic days.

There are still other hilarious rules coming out thanks to the olympics.

Hopefully they will revoke the visa policy because its really causing a lot of problem for business traveller. My visa will be expired by August and I have to travel china 2-3 times every month.....

This is insane - so now I have no idea if I should even bother travelling to Guangzhou from HK when there next week.

I have a 1 year multi entry visa granted here in Melbourne. From some of the earlier posts it seems the Chinese are revoking these upon re-entry to HK?? I go to China a number of times a year, have paid for the multi entry and do not want to forced to be going back and forth to the consulate every second week to get a new single/double entry visa.

Plus I just checked zuji - the internal Chinese flights are stupid expensive now - can someone confirm if they are still 'normal' priced if purchased in HK? At the moment SZ to Beijing buying from here is $940AU return plus taxes... Last trip in March it was about half that. I know they've raised the price but the margin they've raised it by is almost offenaive.

I have a 1yr multi-entry valid through August and crossed the border at LoWu twice last weekend without any problems (I hold a US passport) other than long lines at immigration. No one has revoked my visa and and there no problems other than long lines at immigration.
