Hospital coverage for visitors

Hello

My parents are coming to Hong Kong at the end of February and I'm looking to find out about hospitals over here, as my Dad had a minor heart attack last year and would like to know what the quality of care is live over here?

Are the hopsitals clean and well run? I doubt they would be much worse than the British NHS in any case, but I wondered if anyone had any experiences to share?

How would he be treated in A&E for example - if he (God forbid) had another heart attack and needed treatment would it cost thousands or is there a fixed fee? is English widely spoken by the doctors/nurses?

He'll find out about medical (travel) insurance for the trip, but I seem to think pre-existing conditions are not generally covered by these policies. If anyone has any advice I would be veyr grateful

thanks
Geoff

Geoff,

I would suspect that visitors / tourists would fall under the non-eligible classification.

The list of fees is here

Would highly recommend you contact the paitent relations officer at the hospital close to you and find out what the procedures are. I know it is a morbid task, but it will give you some sense of what you have to deal with, given the hospital.

You can locate the nearest hospitals here

The quality of care does vary depending on the hospital, with Queen Mary, Prince of Wales and Pamela Nethersold Youde being rated as some of the best hospitals in Hong Kong.

Queen Mary (in our experience and knowledge) has very competant staff and have access to experienced doctors who are on the teaching staff.

According to the discoverhongkong website

Quote:
Like many international cities, Hong Kong has world-class hospitals providing outstanding care. Visitors are required to pay $570 if they use the Accident and Emergency services in Hong Kong public hospitals. The Hong Kong Government assures visitors they will receive the emergency care they require. People who cannot pay immediately will be billed later.
I would however, still contact the hospital with specific questions about prolonged care.

In the worst case scenario, the you should also ensure that the existing travel or medical insurance policy provides for repatriation -- so any prolonged care can be taken care of in the home country.
