My parents may be coming to visit... sometime. No urgency to this question, but my father is on a boatload of medications, I am sure at least 1 or 2 of them are on the restricted list. Does he need anything more than the prescriptions in their regular bottles and a letter from his Dr. in the US to bring them in, provided they are a reasonable amount for the length of the trip? Thanks for any input, I poked around on here and the airport/customs websites but didn't find anything very clear... i must be missing it.

Yes - the Customs website does seem to be missing entirely any advice to travellers on prescribed medications.

My advice would be to contact them and ask: Contact Us
