Anyone have any ideas on where I could find an oil thermometer for deep-frying? Thanks!

here is an easier solution

get woodn chopsticks and dip it into the oil. if the chopsticks start to bubble, then its ready

Try Sogo (where Deathboy intends to sneak off and buy a Zippo when his mom's not looking) or Wing On. Most larger department stores should stock them.

You can also try The Panhandler, Prince's Building and Causeway Bay.

Or you can also test the oil with a cube of bread. If it sizzles when dropped in the oil, the oil is hot enough. Alternatively cough up the money for a deep-fat fryer.

And if anyone happens to see a sugar thermometer with C only, I would be interested. (Not wasting my money on a thermometer with F, want one with C only in large, middle-aged eyesight-sized type. )

Well, the chopstick/bread thing will tell you if the oil is hot, but some people fry at precise temperatures in the hope of getting perfect results. Hence the need for a thermometer.

There is a kitchen store in the Pedder Building, same floor as Bumps to Babes and they sell a variety of these. I think they have a larger store in Causeway Bay.

Exactly, I'd like to know how hot the oil is. Wing On was my first guess, now I just have to get around to hauling my ass over to The Island to check it out
