Some bars like to have a bouncer on the door to give it some air of exclusivity, I.E you can't come in unless you look

a. Moneyed
b. Stylish

And certain other criteria depending on the mood of the door b!tch on the day.

Thats the way it goes in this superficial town I'm afraid.

bar that makes you wait in queue when it's totally empty inside is not a good bar...

I'm glad you put that warning out, I'm having second thoughts now. Sounds scary! I was going to meet people rather than check out bars but since you put it like that I'll give it some serious thought.

Have you any suggestions of suitable venues for more civilised gatherings?

Plenty of normal pubs around LKF: Dublin Jack, Bulldog's (non-smoking), HK Brew House (with the advantage that you can liven things up by throwing peanuts around ), the ground floor of Wooloomooloo, the roof of the Fringe Club (weather permitting), .... Groups from here often tend to be a bit big for some of the smaller bars.

Has anyone tried the new sports bar on Hollywood (under the escalator, more or les opposite The Globe) called The Wheel yet?

I'm also quite curious about why Immigration gives employment visas to people to be bouncers. Do they really meet the "add value to the local economy and can't be done by locals" criteria?

Because locals don't fulfill the height/weight balance thats these bouncers have?

But there are plenty of ex-Gurkha permanent residents who could do the job just as well (probably better) if what you need is physical defence (although I come back to my question as to why anyone would want to go into a bar that feels the need for physical defence on the door).

I think its for the exclusivity and the feeling of 'safeness' if a lady is in trouble for example then they'll just speak to the bouncer who will sort it out.

Really - then what's with the unnecessary lengthy explanation, sans any hint of humour / sarcasm / irony?

My one unpleasant experience with one particular club's 'bouncer' was... when my friend suddenly called me up for a girls' night out, and going straight there from nearby gym, I was still in my Adidas lycra top (tho' unsweaty!) but in dark, slim trousers, plus in 2.5" heels... After Q-ing at the entrance 'bout 25mins, the 'door bitch' glanced and signalled my mates thru BUT sorta paused at me, furrowed his hairy and said "no sporty gear", then proceeded to let the rest behind me pass!

Well, OK... but I'd been here a coupla times before - same weekday nights - but THEN, must have been showing the right amount of 'skin', 'skirt' & glam... and NOT enuff now! Hell, the place is NEVER that full anyways, so could ease up, U pretentious gitt ...methoughts. So, we U-turned and were just as merry elsewhere over drinks & chat.

Dunno anything about "Zinc" - sounds not that spacious, esp on a busy night. Hope they're much LESS superficially 'selective'. BUT yeah, try 'new' places out for size, etc.
