my personal definition-

bar= no dancing or very little
lounge= a little dancing, but mostly couches
club= mostly dancing with a few tables/couches.

here's a question for you though- last 2 years (though it's starting to fade), the djs over here would do 'mash-ups'...basiclaly they'd take an 80's track or lyrics and mix it up with a current beat-- made for some good music for the clubs...have you heard of any and are you a fan?

*disclaimer*
sorry if my post sounds pretentious, but i'm simply asking a question that pertains to what i like. the ironic thing is that whomever left me bad rep points stated 'china white is soo 2001' ...then proceeded to call me pretentious

lol bad rep giver..lol.

Have you been to any bars in Wanchai? Very few of them meet any of these definitions (very few couches for a start). And most of them have a fair bit of dancing, certainly later in the evening.

Er, no. Take the music as the people who wrote or played it intended. If it was crap then 6 months later no-one will have heard of it anyway.

Can anyone name any "DJ remix" version of any tune that had a life of more than weeks?

Try Amazonia in Wanchai - real music (melodies, lyrics, that sort of stuff), played live by a band with real instruments. Plenty of dancing partners if perchance you find yourself without one.

You're showing your age PDLM

Soho and LKF are full of bars/lounges/clubs with DJs that match your description (and also the Wanchai kind PDLM outlined, bars with dancing). I like Buddha Lounge in LKF. Not much dancing (none), but the psychedelic decor is cool and I like the variety of music you might hear there. Guitar solos on one night and pretty good NYC hip-hop on another. I don't really do the LKF thing anymore, but there are plenty of people on here who would be happy to do that with you.

Check out hkclubbing.com if you want to learn more about the scene in general. There are loads of threads on nightlife on this board already. Use the search function before posting a new thread

I would rather slam my tackle in a door than listen to some cover band strangling guitars to led zeppilin...let alone be hassled by all the whores in there...

Not everyone understands House music, its a spiritual thing a body thing a soul thing.

Indeed, Certain cover bands in HK are shockingly bad, They're cover bands for a reason i.e they have no discernable talent they're pretty much your glorified Karaoke singers and thats all.

The next time I hear some screaming banshee trying his best to think he's Springsteen or Jon Bon Jovi I'm liable to throw a bottle on stage preferably at his head.

Regrettably the only place I knew where you could slam your tackle in a door closed down a couple of years ago.

True of some, but by no means all. A number of the Filipino cover bands playing in bars in Hong Kong have their own music and are quite well known in The Philippines for it. However, with rampant piracy there they can make a far better living playing covers in, say, Spicy Fingers or Amazonia than they could as recording artists there.

amazonia

I've been to Amazonia twice: first to check out the cover band and the second to confirm it was THE band. I am amazed anyone would describe the band as excellent, man they were unbearable.

And the sex workers trying to get business with those not-so-kosher-looking men--especially the ones who were trying to get some without paying? Pathetic!

? I know of very, very few bars in this town where you will find any kosher men - perhaps at the Mandarin Oriental bars since many such stay there and they are used to dealing with their requirements...

So.. getting back to the topic, here is my 'quick' run-down of clubs in HK, together with type of music, vibe and door policy:

Drop - house and dance, mixed crowd, difficult to get in after 1:30am unless you are a member (like moi!), strong till about 5am

Volar - house and R&B (2 separate rooms), gets good after about 1:30am. Members only policy, get in before 12:30 if u are not

Prive - R&B. Again, members only - o/w get in before about 12:30

Dragon-i - dance, IMHO a bit of a lukewarm crowd not really into the dancing, but more into posing. Pay cover charge generally unless u r a model or know someone

Yumla - Electronic/techno. Good relaxed/uground/but v dancy vibe. 25+ door policy altho i am sure that younger people get in. Ironically it is generally a youngish crowd there I think (or at least young at heart)

Homebase - Cutting edge mix of stuff. Underground vibe. I discovered this one recently and it starts really pumping when other clubs close at about 4 or 5am.

There you go, if anyone has differing views feel free to air them. Also PM me if you're interested in getting in a group for clubbing - on the lookout for ppl who have the stamina to stay out fairly late
