Difference between HK and US outlet (electricty) I am thinking of bringing my computer from US to HK. I know that HK uses 220V and US uses 110V. I also know that there are adaptors that can be purchased. Are these reliable? I do not want to fry my computer with a faulty adaptor or have my computer not totally work. Any info would be great. Thank you, chibichanman

Have you looked at the computer power supply? Most of not all of the newer computer power supplies have a switch at the back which can change the voltage. Best bets would be to replace your computer's power supply when you come to Hong Kong and avoid the bulky converters.

One more thing~ At US, the cord and plug used is called "UL" plug and Hong Kong two common plug still widely used are "BS" offically 3 flat leg plug and "VDE" 2 round round leg plug. Since many ppl here use Japanese 110 comsumer electronics here, you can easily get those converter at any supermarket here and Transformer also. It is realiable.

Plug adapters cost around Y10 each in Luohu Commercial City. They can take any plug and there are various types available to match the wall socket that you use, whether UK /HK, European, N American or Australian types.

Most laptops with that little external power adapter have 110-220 range meaning you can plug your cord into a little HK$10 adapter and be all set. In fact, if you wanted, you could take the black box to Wan Chai's computer center and buy a cord that would work in HK with your box for about $30HK or less. If you are bringing a desktop then you need to double check the power capabilities. Some, like the new Apple IMac are 110-220, but only if bought overseas (the ones for sale in the USA are only 110). You could also just buy a machine here and save the hassle of shipping...

Computer Power supplies I have to take desktops between the US and HK frequently, its a nightmare at US customs, its been swabbed more times than a Surgeons Forhead! I actually use a shuttle, which is auto switching 220/110V, All portable equipment these days is auto switching it seems, hair driers, video games etc. Desktops seemed to actually go backwards, all the machines I bought 10 years ago had a switch on the PSU from 220 to 110V. But I guess to save costs they started to disappear. All desktops have what I refer to as a "Kettle" plug, I have several of each cables and swap as necessary. Check for the small 220/110V switch at the back of the PC.
