i'm thinking of taking it down to make my way to Cambodia, then somewhere over in that direction... i know i could go about it a different route via Nanning, but I need to stop in Kunming anyway.

The the train from Kunming to Hanoi was suspended a few years ago and I doubt that it is running again.

The train was is suspended but you can still go overland. Go by bus through Jianshui and Mengzi to the border at Hekou/Lao Cai. This puts you close to Sapa which you may want to visit anyway. Otherwise there is a train from lao Cai to Hanoi

I've heard that bus ride is absolute hell though. heh
