home in hong kong

My wife is from HK and I am from Australia, where we both live now, but my wife wants to move back to HK to live. We have 2 dogs and want to live in a house, not an apartment. Not sure if house is the right term for what we want, but they are 3 story places with generally a larger living area than an apartment and a rooftop area for pets and a garden maybe.

I have been searching the net for listings of these type of properties but so far have found only for sale listings for apartments. Can someone please provide a link for listings of these houses for sale if they know of one.

Thanks in advance

Look for house in the New Territories.
Dependant upon where you need to work and what your budget is will determine where you choose.

Here's the website of a real-estate agency in Sai Kung: lots of aussies and dog lovers! Big houses!
Way cheaper than HK island. Good for Australian International School if you have kids.

Village House

I believe what you are refering to is a village house. These are 3-story, 700 sq ft per floor buildings and you can rent one (700), two (1400) or all three floors (2100). Some ground floor flats come with garden and second floor flats with the roof terrace.

I think this type of "house" is usually only found in the New Territories or on one of the outer islands. Here is a website for a real estate agency in Mui Wo (Lantau Island) where we are looking to buy the same. Do a search and you will see some for rent or sale.

G'day NEOGEO,

To better understand your question, if you could answer the questions below, it will be a lot easier to offer you comprehensive info.
  • What suburb do you presently live in Australia ?
  • Are you currently living in a typical 2500ft² - 3500ft² house on a 550m² ~ 800m² private suburban block, or are you living in an inner city apartment ?
  • How long does it currently take you to get to and from work?
  • Do you enjoy entertaining friends over for dinner or a BBQ on the weekends at your place of residence ?
  • Do you have a property budget in mind, if so, how much ?

If you can answer the above questions, it will be pretty easy to establish the right lifestyle location in Hong Kong for you, or as similar a residential lifestyle to what you're been presently enjoying now in Aus.

Ok, the answer to your questions:

1. I live in Alexander Heights, Western Australia.

2. Not sure of actual house size, but it is a 3x1 on a 700sqm block. When we spend 4 weeks in HK every year we stay in my father in laws govt apartment in Chai Wan, which is 36sqf. Si I am used to the size of homes in HK.

3. I am on the road for my job daily, my car is my office. So therefore I have no real travel time to get to work.

4. We don't really entertain at our house, we usually have family gatherings at my parents house. If we catch up with friends we usually go to a restaurant or have yum cha, frequently.

5. Property budget is around the HK$2m mark. For that price I am expecting to live in the New Territories. We will be shifting 2 dogs over with us, one is a shi-tzu X jack russel, the other a very active mongrel. That is why we want a villa/house or whatever they are called. I don't have a lot of faith in the HK property market, so don't want a huge mortgage. In the price range I mentioned we would pay cash for a home and therefore have no mortgage.

I know there is what I am looking for because we saw them in January when we were there. Just can't seem to find them online.

Please help.

I have the same problem - no sales listings online even if the site claims to have sales and rentals. Plenty apartments for rent with odd one for sale but NO houses. Very hard to do research on the property market ahead of time online.

There seems to be ton of fake listings also. Not sure what these people have to achieve by using this sort of bait advertising.
