I am looking at a Sony DSC-T300 to take back to the UK with me (I am in HK now!). Can you get discounts in the chain stores? The attraction is a official product with a 1 year international warranty. Or will it be significantly cheaper in Mong Kok (significant would be greater than a 400HKD saving which I figure is what is acceptable to me in terms of the warranty over the saving).

In a word no you will not get a discount at a chain store, you might get a fluffy toy or some other useless tat thrown in depending on whether they have any special promotion on.

For cheaper then yes go to mongkok or wanchai and you might get an international warranty with it, check the packaging in the box first.

Fortress usually knock off 10% for items.

I've bought things for just over 2K and still got 10% off.

Yes - Fortress gave me 10% off the marked price of a dehumidifier last week without me even asking (which is bizarre sales tactics - I'd get fired if I did that in my job).

No - they knew who you were and did not want to risk the negative feedback on geoexpat so they gave you the 10% discount.

i've gotten discounts in fortress and broadway as well... depends on the item really.
