| Finally after all the paper work, my partner and i have been assigned to our schools as NET's. Tim will be working in Tung Chung in Lantau and I will be in Yau Ma Tai. We both envisage we will want to untilise the city parts of central (gyms, climbing gyms, shopping and eating)... so...i'm getting to my question eventually..... Where should we live? We want to live modestly and have about $10,000 - $15,000 to spend per month on rent. Is it easy to live in tung chung and communte? or would it be better to live somewhere like Kwai Fong to be a little closer to the city? Preferably we'd like to be somewhere on the Tung Chung train line (my job is actually closer to Olympic station anyway). If any one can suggest a reasonable place to live that would be a fantastic help. Thanks Corinne |

| Re: Travelling between Tung Chung - Yau ma tai - Central - where should we live? Hi Corinne, Welcome you and Tim to HK. I hope my reply will help you guys some. First of all, Central is out of your daily commute route, unless you want to add 30 minutes, so consider hanging out there on weekends. Otherwise, you have it pretty good. You can find a place easily near the Olympic Station in Kowloon, lots of new buildings, and the rents should be reasonable in that area. Tim can take the Tung Chung Line directly to work, no more than 35 minutes I think. You can catch a 16-seat mini-van or bus to Yau Mai Tei, a 10-15 minutes ride, perhaps? I don't suggest you live near Tung Chung, too, because the MTR closes before midnight, so you guys won't be able to stay out too late, though there are other transportations to get there. Learn the bus and mini-van routes from where you live- to MTR, to KCR, to Hong Kong island, etc.-and you'll be traversing around Hong Kong like a true local. As for gyms, lots of new projects have resident recreational centers, so consider one of those. And you'll never be short of places to eat and have fun in your neighborhood. | Hi Connie & Tim, Agree totally with what bifhavoc has to say. I will only add that kowloon is a great place to be and i really prefer hanging in this area on a daily basis as opposed to central. Plenty of good restaurants, night markets for street shopping, outdoor food markets and top quality shopping malls its all there. Additionally there are concert venues and museums. For me central misses some of the "local flavour" that kowloon still retains. So in the end kinda depends on your personal style and how you would like to experience life on a daily basis ! Enjoy HK. |
