Talking getting married!! Please advise :)

he finally Asked! and now we're engaged, we're planing to have our wedding early next year in Thailand. but since we moved to HK i thought it would be easier to have all the legal paper work done in HK and also later on get me dependent Visa, (My fiance' have a work visa and HKID) i've been reading about getting married in HK and went to the website but its still very confusing to me, is it possible for us to have sign the marriage certificate and all the paper work in HK but have the wedding ceremony in Thailand ? Could anyone please advise me on how to do this?

yes, it is possible. you just book a time at either city hall or one of the other marriage registries. you need two witnesses. i can't remember what it costs though, sorry.

then you can do whatever you want for a ceremony anywhere else in the world.

when hubby and i got married, we did the registry in hk and had a local chinese style wedding party and then a few months later we had a christian "blessing". this took the form of a normal church wedding except that we didn't need to sign anything as we were already, technically, married.

good luck and congratulations!

cara,

You're a little out of date. In HK you can now get married absolutely anywhere you want at any time you want. All you need is an official "civil celebrant" and two witnesses, and 14 days notice. My wife and I did it very simply in a solicitor's office. VONGS - Services - Civil Celebrant
If you just want him to handle the official paperwork and do the legal necessities in his office then it should cost you less than $4000.

yes i realise that, but if they are wanting to just get the cert here and then have the "wedding" somewhere else, my suggestion is still the registry office.

You can also go to the Registry office in T.S.T ask the requirements that you can provide. You can also make appointment online and when you go there, you can bring your certificate that you are single or divorce paper if you are divorced. Also, HK I.D., passports.

Then they will ask you to choose the date that is available for the wedding. The fee 4 years ago is about HK$700.00. My friend paid about HK$2,000.00 one year ago for private civil wedding in Yuen Long.

You don't need a certificate that you are single - no idea where that came from! I believe that as part of the documents you sign when you get married you certify this yourself, but there is no need to get a certificate from any third party.

You can get that from your country of origin. This knowledge was according to my experience, when we married 4 years ago. But you can also check it from the website I mentioned. I also heard from others, they just showed their HK I.D. and passport and did not ask for any other documents.

This is bizarre! How on earth could my country of origin (the UK as it happens) certify that I am single? I haven't lived there for 10 years and they have no idea whether I had married anywhere even when I did live there.

There is no need for any such certificate (I went through this within the last year).
