books for expats

hi all

I need a book to help me understand HK before I move there. Can you recommend one or two for me?

Any input will be appreciated

There are many good books on Hong Kong, especially some directed at areas around HK, but I can suggest a small book called: Hong Kong Life & Culture, by Emily L.Y. Chan. It will give you a step up on some customs, and should help all Expats and visitors.

Good luck.

Explorer publications have a good Hong Kong Guide,

The American Chambers in Hong Kong also has a pretty decent guide (a lot of info for setting up businesses / working in HK etc)

We did the same thing - got 2 books before we moved here as we weren't visiting before we moved.
We purchased Living and working in HK - Rachel Wright - ISBN - 184528013 - X which as been really helpful in the 1st year of being here, and preparing to move here.

Also we got The Expert Expatriate - M Brayer Hess & P Lindermann - 1857883209

we got both from Amazon - the first being more specific to HK.

PM me if you want any more info - we've been here a year now.
Jenny

paul9 has pissed of a few people
Though not specific to Hong Kong, The Expert Expatriate mentioned above was invaluable for my recent move from the US. I found Culture Smart! Hong Kong lackluster, but it's a short/easy read and should probably be on your list.

As for understanding Hong Kong, I found that some geoexpat blogs gave a perspective I couldn't find anywhere else. I got a good laugh from this:
In which they're "totally f@!*ing oblivious!" - Hong Kong Blogs

Thanks for the link to that ranting piece

There have been times I've been as equally infuriated by the strange oblivious rudeness in the bits and bobs of everyday life here. But it's definitely not unique to HK.

Anyway, if you stay long enough, tend to gradually desensitize to most of it... And like with anywhere else, the odd experience, here and there, of thoughfulness and a smile makes one vent less about all the other times.

I suspect that most books won't give you an accurate picture. So besides books, you may read some of the forum posts here to get a first-hand impression about Hong Kong.
