If you are interested in reading about Hong Kong culture in a very enjoyable way, then I recommend Martin Booth's 'Gweilo' (also called 'Golden Boy' in US or other editions). It is about three years of his life growing up in Hong Kong during the '50s as the child of expats. Obviously a lot has changed, but much of the sense of Hong kong is the same. I enjoyed every single page of it.
