" Returning " or " Going " to HK for you XBCs out there

I'm sure there are many ABCs, BBCs and CBCs out there with parents from Hong Kong.

When you guys come to Hong Kong, do people often say that you're " returning " to Hong Kong despite the fact that you were born abroad and raised abroad ?

Whenever I come to Hong Kong, my parents and relatives usually call it " returning " to Hong Kong as in returning home. Other people will often say the same thing when I tell them that I was born and raised in Canada - " So did you come back to find work ? ".

I know my roots are originally from here but I just find it hard to tell people that I'm " coming back " when I wasn't exactly born or raised here. I told someone that I was " returning " to HK once and I've gotten " Why do you make it sound like you're from there ". When I talk to my other Chinese friends, I will sometimes get " So how long have you been back for ? ". It's very conflicting.

What do you guys think of this ?

"Returning to HK" aint exactly the way to put it in my case either, as born, raised, educated & lived longggtime, elsewhere. So find myself still not relating completely to local thinking, attitudes and culture here... Though my understanding of "HK way(s)" has gradually grown by the year, along with some sharpening of my elementary Cantonese (courtesy of friendly locals).

Never really felt "conflicted" myself, even when interrogated by prying, pitying HKers about my "shaky" "allegiance" to things CHINESE

Contemporary living in the wider world - with all sorts sorta "colliding" while on the move, every few years or so. Individual lives overlap multi categories without much angst or drama. Thankfully, got over most of the ambivalence ages ago

beafan will become famous soon enough
i was told in china that i have "blood of the dragon" still flowing in me, hence i'm still chinese, even tho i tell them i'm canadian
besides, i find locals to be very "hk-centric". but i dont think the "how long hv u been back" to be annoying, cuz then i tell them i'm cbc then they'll be like.. oh so why r u back?
