New Book Club

I am interested in finding some like-minded people to start a monthly book club with.

Books sitting on my table waiting to be read
"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer
"Love in the Time of Cholera" by Gabirel Carcia Marquez
"White Teeth" by Zadie Smith
"On Chesil Beach" by Ian McEwan

So contemporary Fiction!

Although I would like to go back and read a few modern classics like "The Great Gatsby" if I can find people so inclined.

I would like to hold in the Central/Shueng Wan/Admiralty Zone.

Because of my travel schedule, I am looking for people who are flexible enough to "name a date" a month that is not perfectly consistent.

This idea's crossed my mind as well (but I'm crap at organising).

One thing - at risk of "dumbing" things down - if you're also including discussion/critiques of film adaptations if any, of novels all agree upon, I'd be interested - coz frankly, sadly... I no longer seem to invest the time/effort into finishing books I start from time to time while here in HK. Stuff just piles up in the dusty corner, till I have to donate them coz NO space... while I read off the net most times

Read the classic Marquez "Cholera" novel many, many years ago, and love anything F.Scott Fitzgerald, my old fav "The Great Gatsby" - beautiful writing...

Ah yes 'White Teeth', the only book I started rereading as soon as I had finished it.
I'm good on Thursday afternoons this month, for meeting up with fans of this book.

btw I am still hunting for the bootleg

I have never joined a bookclub either but I'd be very interested in it. Like Gabirel Carcia Marquez a lot and love the Great Gatsby and Tenderness of the Night, so i guess I'd like books you choose.
Central/Sheung Wan/Admiralty works well for me. Evenings would be better.

Hey susiek,

I've been meaning to join a book club for a while too...and I like your selection of books. So pls let me know if you end up organizing something.

My one suggestion - can we hold it on the weekends. ? Gives everyone a lot more relaxed time to ponder & discuss...

Btw, I'm reading The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles now. It is a treat everyday...

xx

Hey! I read and absolutely LOVED Fowles' "The French Lieutenant's Woman"... many, many moons ago Didn't mind the Jeremy Irons and Meryl Streep film version, either. Yeah, another beautifully written, memorable piece.

As I've PM'ed SusieK in reply - afraid Sunday evenings aren't so easy for me to be on the island, BUT if dates move in future, love a wee chat with you about that particular novel. Enjoy ya read!

I'm interested...all depends on the time/place/book, but I think it should work out alright. Shall we pick a book now and agree to meet in a week?
