AVID Chip for shipment to HK

Hello, I have been reading that my dog needs an AVID chip to get into HK when shipping her there. She already has the Home Companion chip which I guess doesn't count. My vet does not use the AVID chips and can't do it for me, does anyone know how to go about getting one and if the dog needs to be put under (anastesia) to get it done ?

I also read that if you dont' have it when arriving in HK they will put it in for you ? Is this true ? I'm assuming then that the dog isn't put under while in an airport freight terminal.

Thank You

Yes you are right, if your dog does not have an AVID chip when arriving in HK, they will put one at the airport.
Don't worry about getting the AVID chip, it is just a simple injection, nothing more.

re AVID chip

We just went through this whole process as well -- yes, they will implant the special 9 digit Avid chip at hk airport. However, we wanted to spare our dog some pain at the end of his plane ride, so our vet was able to get a chip to implant before we left. We had to call a couple of vets in order to find one. The needle that is used to implant microchips is like a 12 gauge -- a size used for needle biopsies and many sizes larger than the needle used to donate blood, so it is not like a typical vaccination. No anesthesia required, but as I said, the needle is huge! Good luck finding the chip wherever you are -- if you find a vet who is used to seeing pets that travel internationally, they should know what you are talking about.

Do you live in the States. My dog came with me last August and I had AVID in California ship it to me on the East Coast within 48 hours (and the scanner). My vet implanted the chip, used my scanner to document the code and then also put the 13 digit coded chip in for the USA for when we came back. I'm happy to give you all the info I have if you want it.

Re AVID chip price

It cost us USD 70 for the chip, placing the chip, and the registration. I think we were overcharged as our vet's prices are high in general, but oh well.

Hey Sapphireruby,

A little off the topic, but where do you take your dog to run around and get some exercise off leash? Any good suggestions?

Hi mdood,

Not sure whether you're on the HK Island or not but, I take my little guy to grass area at Cyberport (pier/waterfront area), lots of people take there dogs there and throw them balls to chase after. It's very dog friendly and my girls get to ride their bike/scooter around at the same time. There's also a ton of walks at the Tai Tam Reservoir where I take his lead off and he gets to charge ahead of us. Hope this helps.
