a few questions on HK..(accomodation, cpap ..)

Hi All,

Thanks for posting all the wealth of information in this site.

I am moving from japan to HK in mid feb. Did some research on accomodation.

I will work in central but the bank might move to kowloon in few months so have to consider both factors

need 3 BR in a nice area...45- 50 min door door travel....budget 10k /month

1. Tung chung seems to be a nice area within my constraints. is it 45-50 mins door to door from central and kowloon both (approx.)

2. is tc closer to kowloon than central?

3. is tc expat oritented? do we have some % of expats liviing there? i liked the area from my search and appears to be within my budgets

3. how about gold coast? how much the travel time to central and kowloon ? any point I should consider for this?

4. How about bellagio? travel time to central; and kowloon? is it noisy , I have sleep problems and hence need a quite place (specially at night).

I will own a car so also want to keep parking costs in mind when considering a place.

Also, does anyone where use the CPAP machine (for sleep apnea), if yes , please recommend a good doctor and clinic for this? where can i buy this in HK?

Thanks a million for helping me out with this.

Thanks,
B

Assuming your prices are in HK dollars then $10K for a 3 bedroom place is tight but doable.

However, are you planning on driving to work? If so then make sure your company provides a car parking space at the office, otherwise you'll be looking at HK$3000+ per month for that alone. Remember to be clear when renting a place that you need a space there too. At the low end it is by no means automatic that there will be such a space and you may need to rent one separately. Most people (especially at the lower end of expats as you are with such a small budget for accommodation) choose not to run a car in Hong Kong - public transport is much cheaper and often just as quick. Tung Chung to Central is about 28 minutes on the train, which arrives right underneath IFC/Exchange Square (where many of the banks are). It's about 3 minutes less to Kowloon Station, which is may be close to your Kowloon office if it will be in West Kowloon, but not as close as Central is to IFC/Exchange Square (i.e. the door-to-door time would probably be longer). If it's HSBC then their big Kowloon offices are next to Olympic station, which is very convenient from Tung Chung.

Expats live pretty much everywhere in Hong Kong, but only in Discovery Bay does the proportion get much above I would guess 20%. In most areas on Hong Kong Island probably at most 5-15% of residents in a development are expats, but all the areas you mention are pretty expat-friendly.

(Can't help on the medical stuff I'm afraid.)

Hello,
Re: Tung Chung- It's been a great place to live and you feel very international. I live in a very new building, only half occupied so far (in Caribbean Coast) and pay 13k for a 3 bdrm, so it's cheap. to pay less you'd have to live in a rural part of Tung Chung.

We have great views, mountains, sea, lots of outdoor parks and green walks, 5 pools (2 indoor), gym.

It's really quiet here in TC, practically no cars at night.
Best, Bob

We love it out here, right near the Gold Coast.

Hi Bsc,

We live 15 minutes walk away from the Gold Coast Mall, I can't really comment on the rental side of things as we don't rent as such, but I can put you in contact with an agent in Tuen Mun who speaks spot on English.
Peggy Lau 92772382 from Centaline, quite helpful and diligent, the best we know of.

A list of properties in the area below.
  • The Aegean Coast. In your budget located opposite of the Gold Coast Mall on Castle Peak road.
  • Palm Beach Villa's. In your budget. a km up the road from tThe Aegean Coast, on the same side of the road.
  • Sea view Villa's on the same side as Gold Coast hotel.
  • Aqua Blue - located at the end of Tsing Fat road. A possible inc a car space, but may have to budget a tad more if you want sea views.
  • Peridot Court in your budget inc car space which is off Tsing Lung Road, Yu Choi Street/court.
  • The first row of village houses high up on the hill ( blue roofs ) located off Ka Wo Li hill road, in your budget and car parking is free within the grounds. Roof top village houses appeal if you want another 700FT open space included ontop of the same amount inside.
  • Pearl Island apartments located at the very end of Tsing Lung Road. Definitely in your budget inc a car space.

Everything hinges off the quality of renovation done, as all complexes differ greatly as to what the apartment inside will be like. A good idea to see a few, until you find one that meets all of your requirements.

Here is a simple map of the area I modified from a Google earth photo, just to give you an idea where the mentioned complexes are.

Cheers mate.

Good luck

Here is an online map for HK, as you have never seen one. It's searchable.
YPMap

My partner and I live in Caribbean Coast. Only the last couple of towers to go on the market are not full.

Just fyi, the thing you should know at CC is the noise. For example, last night, just after 11pm, our upstairs neightbours decided to partake in some DIY - this has been a common occurence since Christmas although they usually do it around 9pm. We contacted the Management office twice. But they seem to hire deaf security guards who never hear anything. We often heard drilling/hammering on Sundays which could come from half a dozen floors away - the floors/ceiling/walls are very thin. Again the Management office turns a deaf ear to it.

We have to listen to them having a pee, stomping around the flat, slamming doors, dragging furniture around, etc. There is a break from the noise from 1am till 5.15am. Having spoken to others, we know we are not alone. Someone on a Caribbean coast forum (not on here) posted a question enquiring about soundproofing. What does that tell you?

And yes, we are looking to move... after nearly half a century of living in HK between us, we haven't lived anywhere so unconducive to sleep.
