Unhappy SARS and Civit Cats

So SARS may now have come from the Civit Cat, a sadly misnamed animal that is in no way related to cats. Eating and trading these animals is supposedly illegal in China as the animal is on the endangered species list, although film of the markets in Guangdong on TV last night show they are freely available, along with almost any other animal you care to mention.

Now people in China and Hong Kong are dumping their pets again (SCMP did not help by misprinting a photo of a wild cat in their story, typical of them) although there is no evidence that they can transmit the disease. The Gov in Singapore is rounding up stray cats and disposing of them which is a real shame. We have a large number around our estate and they make the place feel more friendly and homely and also keep pests down. Would be a real shame if our Gov decides to follow Singapore and they all were taken away but I can see it happening.
