My Husband and I are moving to the UK in the next few months. Our son is Autistic and has been treated here in HKG with great success. But, looking ahead we think our son may require better services for his Education than what is provided here in HKG. UK provides services for children with Autism and has an interest to push them into the main stream as they get better.
We do have some friends in the UK to help us settle in;
but we need more information from all of you out there; for what to look out for.
My son and husband are full Brit Citizens; but it'll be their first time living in the UK;
Can you please let us know what are the best ways to enroll into the services provided by the Govt in the UK & what services we can use to help us keep afloat financially while we look for work.

Ummmm you're moving to the u.k with no jobs and want to claim benefits straight away?

It just doesn't work like that, You will need to be assessed and if your savings are over a certain threshold then you're unlikely to get any benefits, As this is to try and deter benefits cheats etc.

Sorry if I sounded harsh but I worked my backside off in the u.k for 18 solid years and paid my taxes and never once claimed a penny in benefits and or social security, And somebody who may of never paid a penny in the pot suddenly wants to start taking.

I'm with Jimbo on this. This illustrates exactly Mrs Thatcher's case for not giving British passports to everyone in Hong Kong before the handover. If Immigration does its job you (the wife) won't even get a visa to live there if your husband doesn't have the means to support you.

E.g. Your son's age?
And have you worked & paid your share of taxes while in the UK? Etc.

This suggests that they were working in the government or police force prior and during to the 97 takeover thus got u.k residency by 'default' If thats the case then they wouldn't of paid a penny in taxes.

Usually I love your posts and totally agree with them but YES: that is a bit harsh! If you had a handicapped kid you would do what it takes to make him grow up in a nurturing environment- and the point of paying taxes is not so you can personally claim them back in benefits, it's so everybody can benefit from social and health services, including and mostly those who can't afford them.

You're ok with your tax dollar paying for the "coalition forces" (as the Americans would like us believe) but you're not ok with them being used to help someone out, who more than likely will eventually become a contributor to the economy?

Have you written to your MP with your problems with your tax dollars being used for anything other than your own welfare?

I would suggest you contact Gov Agencies now and ask them how you stand legally etc. I take it you have already established your right to live and work in UK. If you have never lived there before you will need to get a social security number for yourself and Husband before you can get in the system. If you search on line you will find all the info you need on the UK Gov websites and you can be sure it's correct. If you email or ring them they will be able to better help you.

Good look with you Little boy I appreciate what having an Autistic child is like and the difficulties involved in doing the simplest of things.
