Not sure about the absolute BEST "xlb" in HK, but whenever I want a juicy bite of Shanghai, & don't have much time, the little cha-chang-teng shop in Causeway Bay is pretty yummy.

It's on the right-hand side of Jardine's Bazaar (mid-way down that rd) coming around from MTR Exit F, CWB. There's an Eng menu incl. ole Shanghai favourites like hot sticky rice wrapped round pork floss, & stir-fried "neen-go" with a mix of veg, & classic hot-sour soup, just right for this not-so-warm weather (that peo here treat as CHILLY!).

I'd mention other wee shops in Prince Ed. & off Mongkok but they're not so easy to find & may be too crowded for your taste + out of the way.

Tend not to eat out in big fancy restaurants so don't know really good branded ones to recommend. I don't mind busy basic diners that "locals" frequent - And you get a lot more for your $$$

Thumbs up

thanks! i'll def check that out.. maybe for lunch today. i tend to prefer local hole-in-the-wall places, too! nothing beats cheap, good food.

please let me know if you have any other local favorite spots! i'm a huge foodie (a big part of why i decided to move to HK from California).

Try the xiao long bao from HK old restaurant. Pricey, but awesome - their's is a special variant that contains crab chowder (powder?) which imo makes it classy and delicious.

I would vote for Hung Hom Metropolis mall's "Yao Yat Kay(?)" Xiao long bao. The skin is perfectly balanced, it won't rupture easily when you pick it up while not having too thick of a dough skin and it's juicy too.
Tried Jade's but theirs is a bit dry and thick skinned for me compared to the one at Metropolis.
It's always crowded there during the evening, but if you go late afternoons, no waiting and you pretty much have the whole resturant to yourself!

I hv tried "Ye Shanghai" @ Hong Kong MarcoPolo Hotel / TST. not only they hv the ordinary Xiao Lung Bao, they have another one which is bigger but have a lot of soup inside.

it's interesting that they will give u a straw to drink the soup 1st! YUM!

I'll vote for a local restaurant in Hunghom, forgot the name of the place. It's at Tak Man Street, close to Whampoa Garden.

The dough is so fresh that you can still smell & taste the flour. It is not of the ultra-thin type, which has its merits too, but it is not thick either. I like chewy food (chewy udon or fried rice are so much better than their soft variants), hence the balance of thickness and chewiness is good for me.

The meat and soup are of the right proportion, not really spectacular, but nothing to complain about.

Bon appetit!
