Moving to HK after university

Hi everybody.
We're two brothers (as you can read from the nickname) and we're from Italy.
We're planning to finish the university (Tourism Economy) in 2010. We won't do the "specialistica" (we dont know the word in english,in italy it's 2 years after the normal university (3 years)).
Moreover,We went to HK last summer for 1month on holiday and we were amazed by this city.
We know italian (), english (very well), french and we're learning mandarin.
We are very young (in 2010 we'll be 24 years old) and without any working experience () unless one stage in a company because of the university.
We'd like to know what kind of expectation we can have when we'll move to hk.
For example:
-accomodation: flat with 2 bedroom (or 1),1 bathroom, 1 kitchen with a table(we dont need balcony, garden or fancy stuff) and of course an airconditional. The location is ok also far from Central (Chai Wan is ok too or Tsuen Wan). A decent apt , not a shithole
-eating out: we love chinese food and we'll eat only in chinese restaurant (not the fancy ones), maybe when we have to eat italian we cook at home
-work: whatever it takes.
-hobby: we're addicted to dvds, cinemas and stop. We are doing body building in italy but if we move to Hk we'll stop it and maybe began martial arts.
-shopping: only dvds/vcds store and we know already the prices. Clothes are ok the cheap ones and the things we bring from Italy.

What do you think?is it possible to make a decent living with these expectations? which could be a good salary/job for us (we'll be going to live together in the flat)?
Thank you

You can't just roll up in Hong Kong and move in. You need a (non-tourist/visitor) visa to reside in Hong Kong, and you can only get that if you can get an employer to sponsor an application to Immigration for an Employment Visa and Immigration is convinced that your potential employer could not find a local to do the job. This is non-trivial for new graduates unless you have some particularly special skill or knowledge.

Your only hope is to try to get an internship (say with an Italian company) and see if they will later offer you a position and sponsor your visa application.

If you come to Italy with a visa you can find a job in the place without any sponsor.
But tell us something, if we go to HK with a visa and find a job as waiter or something like that, is it not possible? or you still need to have a sponsor from some company?

I believe you have misunderstood how Visas work. As a foreigner, you cannot work in Hong Kong without an Employment Visa or by being married to someone who is either a HK Permanent Resident or who has an Employment Visa. In either of these cases you would be granted a Dependant Visa which would also allow you to work. There are many other different types of Visa, none of which allows you to work (except short-term study visa, and working holiday visas (which Italians are not eligible for). Employment Visas are linked to a specific job and must be sponsored by your (potential) employer. Dependant Visas are not, and are sponsored by the person on whom you will be dependant.

It is pretty much unheard of for Immigration to grant Employment Visas for work as waiters of similar low skill stuff. Knowing that no employer will make you any such job offer.

But you could still come for 3 months to have a good look around and scout out a job - that seems to be what most people do. Then if you wanted to stay for longer, you need to leave and come back (day trip to Macau). But waiting tables is not really viable as a form of employment here for foreigners. Lots of other companies are willing to sponsor if you will work hard for little recognition and reward. As long as you have fairly low expectations, you could have a great time!

fiol_brothers: you may want to look into language teaching jobs in Hong Kong. With a university degree and a teaching qualification (which can be obtained in a few months) you have a chance of finding work that will qualify you for an employment visa. Finding a job teaching Italian won't be as easy as finding a job teaching English or Mandarin, but I have seen some advertisements for Italian language courses around, so there must be at least some demand for Italian teachers. If you consider this option, doing some language tutoring while you are in Italy will give you some experience that HK immigration will view favorably. Good luck.
