We're hoping to avoid using a pet shipping service- just seems like sooo much money.

Thanks!
The Toronto to HK flight via Air Canada is great for shipping animals. I personally used the service, in late April to ship my 121lb Golden retriever. The Paper work was a headache. I think More So because there had been a reported case of K-9 rabies in the city within 6 months. I have to get EXTRA paperwork and tests done to avoid quarantine. I found that the hotline set up in HK was priceless, Norris Lui I think it was, was extremely helpful throughout the process. I knew way ahead of time where my dog was needed to be picked up, and the biggest problem was the waiting for my dog to be brought over.

To the person who had their cat quarantined, how could you not look over the documents before leaving?
My vet had screwed up documents several times. It caused a lot of running around.

My company has recently hired an employee currently in Thailand who is bringing two cats. There is four months quarantine from that country, because of the situation with rabies in Thailand. She shipped her cats early (she comes in two more months) and myself and another colleague have visited her cats in quarantine here. The facility is very nice and the cats have lots of room. You can visit them as much as you like. Sorry, but I don't know about the cost.

All went relatively well!

We've finally arrived, and the cats got here 1 day later. We didn't use a shipping service, and saved roughly $1000 USD (but had a lot of running around). All went well, till the airline lost the original paperwork with the permits and such. A few hours of negotiating and calling here and there (at midnight, while still jetlagged and exhausted) and a final taxi ride, and the whole family was re-united! Now, if the rest of our relocation will go smoothly...

Glad it all worked out in the end.

wasn't the cargo terminal in HK a Zoo? I mean walking back and forth and back again... then waiting for them to bring the animal up... I tell you, crazy stuff, but you know this now.

DIY animal consignment

yes i had to do the walkaround with the animal transport company as had been accidentally put down as the official consignee -so I ended up paying all that money and had to go there anyway -the nice Ferndale fellows explained as we went ,but I was horrified at how dumb the whole process was -(back and forth ,paper after paper back to other original counter -just mindless bureacratic job creation I reckon really ) and how heat stressed my dog was by the time I got her- won't put her thru that again in a hurry

No matter how well you prepare the cats will soil their carrier and also be shell shocked when they arrive. I'm also still not sure about those gerbil water bottles. I had a stopover before Hong Kong and their carrier was soaked from the bottles. Maybe I had a bad brand? One last suggestion for all those planning flights with pets. I ended up taking to airlines, which meant I was able to see my cats between flights when handing them off to the 2nd cargo. This seemed to relax the cats a bit, gave them time to walk around, and also provided me an opportunity to feed/water them.
