Chinese New Year

Hi guys, what's your plans for CNY - with holidays from Thurs to Sunday! First time spending CNY in HK... wondering how will it be like.. heard everywhere will be quite quiet with the shops closed.. hoping to plan something with those who will be in HK during that long weekend.

Shops will close? I heard that shops will open for longer hours?

oh...most shops will close at this time (at least for the 1st 7 days)

the only excitment is probably visiting the "flower market" in the last day of year of pig. *Feb 6th 2008

the CNY is the days to spend with family and relatives.
it's like a Chinese old saying.
Young people spends 360 days of the whole year with friends outside, why not be a good boy/girl to spend 5 days at home with parents, and visiting relative.

if you want something to do in CNY, my suggestion is to

(1) learn to play Mahjong so you can visit friends' families to get "red pocket" (money, hehe), and stay to play Mahjong with them...They will definitely like you alot!!

(2) join tours to cities of China. This way, you can experience different tradition of how to celebrate CNY in different regions of China. (it's a big country, you know)

This is simply not true in Hong Kong. Small family shops may shut for a couple of days or even a little longer, but all the big stores will be open pretty much as normal (as per other public holidays).
