Diwali etiquette?

I've been invited to a "small diwali party" at the home of an ethnic Indian couple who are good friends of mine. I've never been to any diwali event before - is there anything special I should take/know/do/expect?

Berry, You might be aware that Indians are divided into many communities like Sindhi/ Punjabi/ Marwadi/ Gujarati and many more. Each community has its own tradition and sometimes slightly diff way of celebration. Moreover, some of them have changed with time and redefined their own tradition. But in general, it would be nice if you could take some gift along. The most common gift that should apply to all communities is 'Indian Sweet'. You may get it from any of Indian Provision Stores in TST. However, i would go one step further and personally recommend you to buy something which may really surprise them and that is a silver coin of Indian God/ Godesse preferably one which has Lord Ganesh, Godesse Laxmi and Godesse Saraswati on it. For any ethnic Indian family Diwali is a religious festival and such coin is highly considered as a symbol of good luck. You can buy if from one of Indian Jewellers in TST. For your ref,
(1) RS Jewellers, G Fl, Far East Mansion, Next to TST Post Office,Middle Road
(2) XYZ (Not sure abt name), Basement, Holiday Inn, Nathan Road, TST.

Silver coins are available in 10g, 20g, 50g, 100g and should cost HK$ 4/ Gram. You may also consider buying a box of sweet (Should be HK$ 100-150) from Chung King Mansion (next to Holiday Inn) and a 20g coin. That should make the best combination, i guess.....

P.S. : If you buy Sweets, make sure its nicely packed and imported from India, not the local one made in Chung King Mansion...

Plucky,

Ethnic Indian as opposed to?

Normally, I'd say, be yourself. Unfortunately... if you're anything like yourself on this site, it might be a bit of a disaster.

Oh yeah, you can get mithai -- or as Nivant calls it "Indian sweet" from most of the Hollywood road restaurants like Bombay Dreams and Jashan.

nivantj,

Thanks for the advice. Similar addresses on HK side would be nice

KIA,

"Ethnic Indian" as opposed to Indian - meaning their nationality is not Indian. They are Hindu, but only moderately.

When you go to an Indian home they'll definitely have lots of sweets, so I wouldn't take any more. How about a hamper from Oliver's?

And it's a pity you didn't read what he wrote! nivantj was referring to jewellers, which you have not mentioned.
