| | | Good job offer, bad money I was recently offered a great job opportunity with a respected organization in Kong Kong. It would offer excellent growth opportunities in my career. But the pay would be maybe 35,000 USD -- a lot less than I make now in New York City. IS it possible to live on that salary in Hong Kong? On a scale of 1-10 (one begin easy and 10 being difficult), how difficult would it be to survive in Hong Kong on that kind of money?
Also, what are average rents in Hong Kong for a small studio?

| | | Hard to answer this question as there are a lot of factors to take into consideration e.g. what lifestyle are you looking for, do you have kids of school age and a million other things. This subject has been discussed many times in a number of forums. I suggest you do a quick search to get some ball park figures for different scenarios. | |

| | | NYC and HK are similar enough; could you survive on $35K in NYC? | |

| | | Can you live on that? Yes. Will you be saving for your porsche? No. That is HK$22K per month. You will be sharing a flat but yes it is perfectly possible to live here and have a social life on that money. I know, I did it on the equivalent 13 years ago. | |

| | | What You Need To Live On In Hk It would be very tough. My daughter was on US$5000 more than that and it provides you with a student style life, not enough for buying anything new and you would not have money to spend on entertainment. Do you have a degree? This is a low salary for HK.Check a few employment sites and you'll get a feel for your right salary level. For this salary level you could work in Shenzhen across the border and pay 20% of what you pay in HK for your daily needs. | |

| | please clarify....
if you're referring to US$35K a month, sure you'll "survive"....quite well, too..
if you're referring to US$35K a year,....you'll still "survive", but without quite so many perks you would normally enjoy if you get that kind of money in a month.....

| | | Clarification Thanks for all the responses -- that's 35k USD per year -- which is maybe 272K per year HKD. I'm young, single, willing to take risks. I know how to stretch a dollar -- but I can't live in a dump. I'm curious how much a simple, clean studio costs -- nothing extravagant, doesn't have to be in fancy part of town. | |

| | | if you enjoy living in materialist decency, it's not too hard to find a place from 3000-5000$HKD, although you'd most likely be sharing a flat, unless you'd consider living out on an island (eg. lamma island), which in some respects, it could be quite nice.
like someone already mentioned, it depends on your lifestyle. but 35K shouldn't restrict you to -shabby- living.

If you add in a willingness to make a long commute, you'll find something. And an hour long commute on a series train isn't nearly as bad as an hour driving a car. (Not that you'll have to commute for an hour, but you get the idea.) | | Tools | Search | | | | | Rate This Thread | | | All times are GMT +8. The time now is 11:44 PM.
