Hey there Misty. From the sound of it, this could be your first mac, and I'd welcome you to the community (not sure if you need anyone to help you. I have a lot of mac experience).

The extreme basic word editor on the mac does open word files, however, that is all it is, an extreme basic word editor. My suggestion, go buy office. It's a fantastic program, and has many features not found in the PC counterpart. If cash is a little tight, purchase the education edition. There is NO difference between the education and standard, except you get 3 licenses, and no school ID is required for purchase

There is a new version of office coming out for Mac end of this year, but if you buy office now, there is a free upgrade coupon included.

Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions (feel free to PM me).

Thanks!

Hey Misty, if you're still looking to buy the iMac, I have a brand new one for sale that I won as a prize. It's the 20" model.

I posted here : http://www.geoexpat.com/classifieds/...product/21455/

Let me know if you're interested.

It is sooo nice to hear people are helping out others...but don't you think they should help themselves, too! Keep the imac!!!

Actually, it is a great gesture. I hope you all enjoy your imacs, they're wonderful machines. And if you or anyone has any Apple related questions, feel free to ask!!

Happy Holidays to all!

Hi again

We have ordered an iMac and wanted to ask if it is possible and easy to set up a Sony Vaio on the airport express base station for wireless Internet?

I am a real novice when it comes to this stuff so any advise would be appreciated.

Hi there Misty!
Happy holidays, and happy new year. I'd like to congradulate you on your purchase of an imac, and welcome you to the apple family and community!

For your question about wireless, it should be no problem. The apple airport uses all of the standard wireless channels and frequencies. The only issues i've come across in my experience, is that windows like to use specific security protocols, and are extremely "tight" on the restrictions. So when setting up the security, set it up to the windows specifics. The Apple can access it all.

Any more questions, feel free to PM me, or even chat with me on MSN

Happy Holidays!

Thanks!
Apple's own iWork software is in my opinion far superior to Office. The new version also includes Numbers which is a spreadsheet application.

iWork's apps will open all Office formats and export to those formats as well. There will be a 30-day trial on your new machine and you can either just purchase a serial number over the internet or buy a nifty box in one of the stores.

kg.

Like incompatibility of documents

There is a new Office version out, 2008, but as with all versions of Office be prepared for incompatibilities for anything but a basic letter.

You can run NeoOffice for 100% compatibility with ODF documents, free:

NeoOffice Home
