Washer/Dryer Combo... a good thing, or forget about it?

My husband and I are about to move into a new flat and need to look for a washing machine. There are these washer/dryer combo machines on the market that I've never tried before. I'm wondering if anyone had used one before and have any comments. I've heard that the drying function doesn't work very well? Is that true? Is it worth the money? Or better just forget about it? Thanks in advance.

I've had one and it neither washed nor dried as well as two seperate machines. It's a good thing if you're a student living in tight quarters and who doesn't care if their linen is perfectly cleaned and such, but if you have space to put two machines and can afford to, go with the traditional machines instead of the combo.

mine washed as well as any other (not sure why it wouldn't) but yeah, the dry function (which uses heat to vaporize the excess water, then condenses and pumps it out) for the most part was useless...plan on 'drying' for 2+ hours for each load of wash...and your machine is tied up 'drying' a load when it could be washing the next one...btw, I DO have an electric tumble dryer for sale if you have the extra room...send me a PM.

It varies a lot by model. I've had a Whirlpool in which the drying function was useless and the washing wasn't that good. But I had a Thomson Vedette in another flat which was excellent both as a washer and a dryer.

A good high-speed spinner plus outside drying lines are also a possibility, particularly if you have someone to take care of all the laundry hassles for you.

Thanks for all your comments. Sounds like we'll have to rethink this. Unfortunately, we don't have room for both a washer and a dryer, so we may very well just get a regular washing machine and line dry... indoors, not out. I have a fear that all my clothes will be scattered in the streets of Hong Kong if I hang them outside. :P Thanks again!

Hey PDLM, I 'm not familiar with that Thomson Vedette brand. You don't happen to know if that's available in Hong Kong, do you? Or whether it's very expensive? Thanks for your help.

It was 3 or 4 years ago so the range may have been updated, but this looks like the one:
http://www.gilman-group.com/search_p...?productid=264
I bought it from those people (Gilman). It was less than $5K at the time, but I can't remember the exact price.

Bear in mind that the maximum tumble drying load load is quite small. And it's a top loader so you need to have a space that can cope with that.

Ah, top loader... no can. We can only have a front loading machine. Well, I think we're gonna go with a regular washing machine but maybe with a higher spin function then.

Thanks ya'll!

Thomson top load washer/dryer combo.. please help!

I just recently moved into a new place that has a Thomson washer/dryer combo. I put clothes in and tried to run the program however after filling with water, the lights "end" and "clean filter" show up.

So I took the filter out and cleaned it and put it back in and it does the same thing. Please help !
