Nope, you don't have to bring your passport at all if you have an "***" or "R" HKID. If they ever ask they're probably just not sure if "R" is valid for entry. Usually, they'll just ask their supervisor if it's valid for entry and once they get the "yes" , they'll let you in.

I remember that one night, the queue was really long so I saw a group of non-permanent Hong Kong residents taking the HK resident line. The immigration officer just shook his head , directed them to the visitor's line. One guy didn't bring his passport so he was sent back to Hong Kong. They probably had "C" which meant conditional stay.

Or an "A" for right of Abode.

Does anyone happen to know if they will let a non-permanent resident (with passport) entering with their permanent resident spouse through the "HK residents" line together?

Your spouse will have to take the visitor's line. I've seen people who brought their non-permanent HKID along with their passport to the HK resident line and the immigration officer just directed them to the visitor's line. You can both line up at the visitor's line since they can process HKPICs as well.

Are you sure?? Unless things have changed of late, there's no distinction at the entry point in Macau between PRs and others in the HK Residents queues. Indeed, in the 7 years before become PR, I'd stand in the same queue as other HKers with no issue except that it would take a minute or so extra to process my passport over the mere seconds for eligible HKID holders. And after I became PR, the counters have still been the same. Again, unless something has changed, by right both the persons mentioned by PDLM should be able to be processed at the same counter.

That's what I was thinking - it's been a while, but I think I have always used the HK residents line even before becoming PR.

I'm not yet a PR but always use the HK residents line entering Macau, never been turned away. It does say HK residents and not HK permanent residents.

I could be wrong on that. I've been to Macau four times in the past three months and I've only seen people holding HKIDs in the HK resident line since. There has a time where I saw a person getting redirected to the foreigner channel after lining up in the HK resident channel. Maybe he was a non-HK resident who happened to line up in the wrong queue at peak hours.

Either way, it still doesn't hurt to take the HK resident line first since that queue is pretty much always empty.
