Thumbs down Egoism

Typical way of handling the relationship by Europeans.
Can not deal with it, just get rid of it. No emotions but egoism.

S Korean consulate inundated with adoption offers for rejected child

The South Korean consulate has been flooded with offers from families to adopt the Korean girl given up by a Dutch diplomat and his wife.

"They have been coming from everywhere - we even had one from the US - and there have been many other calls with people wanting to help in some way," said Cho Won-hyung, consul for public affairs.

Nothing typical of this being a typical European response. Most govt folks would first go into a bunker, accept no responsibilities and once the critics have forgotten and moved on to the next cause, come out and deal with the issue.

Having said that .. I guess they're discussing this issue over egg nog and mulled wine in the Hague at the moment.

I think one of the difficulties here is that the responsible agencies involved (Social Welfare and Mother's Choice) are, quite rightly, refusing to make any comment on the matter. So we're only getting the shit-stirrers' version of the story, which has regularly been shown to contain major factual errors as it has evolved.

Ok, what are the factual errors here?

1) 4 month old baby adopted in Korea by Dutch couple

2) They move to HK at some point and have their own kids

3) The kid develops "bonding / abandonment issues" which according the SCMP are often found with kids in orphanages

4) Adopting parents figure this is too much for them and figure out its easier for them to put the kid in some sort of facility at the mercy of social welfare groups

5) The parents have the means and resources to provide private care for the kid even if they cant do it in their own home as a part of their family?

6) Father has not come up and said "Get of my back folks .. I'd have done the same to my own son or daughter who had the same issues".

Am I missing something here?

As I read it:

4) Having some difficulties, the parents involve "experts" in the form of doctors, social welfare, Mother's Choice, etc. After persevering for some time (at least a year in the reports I have read) the advice from the experts was that it was in the best interests of the child if she spends some time in a different environment (i.e. with foster parents).

5) I don't see what you're getting at here. If you've accepted that the situation isn't working and "experts" are involved then surely the best people to determine what should happen next are the "experts" not the unfortunate parents who have thus far been unable to make the relationship work. I have not seen any information at all on what financial support (if any) the adoptive parents are providing for their adopted daughter in the new environment.

6) There are very tight restrictions on diplomats talking to the press. Once he was in the Netherlands and able to get things cleared through the relevant authorities then he did issue his side of the story.

The errors of fact or supposition I was referring to include:
- that the parents were not Asian (he is ethnically Indonesian)
- that the couple thought they were infertile at the time of the adoption (they have an older natural son)
- that they "abandoned" the baby whereas they in fact accepted the advice of "experts" that moving her to another home was in the child's best interests

Shit stirring questions ...

And one might also want to know some facts which might never get published.

When was the last time they communicated with her?

Did they get her a christmas present this year? I'd assume so since they wanted her back from the repair shop when she was fixed.

Would the Dutch govt have responded differently (or could they have?) if this was a Dutch national that was abandoned?

All very valid questions. I don't have a problem with the questions - it's people making (often incorrect) assumptions about things on which they have no real information that I do have a problem with.

psampras88 can only hope to improve
I guess for all of us who reacted quite emotionally in this thread, this is about behaving responsibly with human lives - this girl's childhood was put under the Dutch man's responsibility - this girl has only one life and it is just so heartbreaking to see that this adult, supposedly responsible diplomat, managed to screw it up for her...

Having said that, there are so many other cases of adult parents badly screwing up their children únique' lives that dont get publicized....

Just out of curiosity, why is everyone focusing on the man? Weren't there two people equally involved?
