Hi,

a friend of mine is holding a valid HK work permit, and was thinking of moving jobs within HK. Would anyone be able to tell me if the work permit will be canceled and it would be needed to re-apply for a work permit OR can one keep the work permit until the expiry, regardless of moving to work for another company. I would think it would be possible and I am not sure the work permits are conditioned to 1 employer only, but appreciate any addtl feedback before giving a reply to my friend. Thanks.

No - the Employment Visa is onl;y valid for work with the employer who sponsored it. He needs to apply for transfer of sponsorship and for it to be granted before he can start work in the new job. This could take anything from 2 to 6 weeks. The new job has to meet all the same criteria - so there is always a chance that the new Visa will not be granted.
