Are you sure it was by looking at the Prefix on the number, not by looking at the "O" in the symbols which specifically says "born outside China" or the "Z" which says "born in HK"?

The thing that changes on your HKID when you go from, say, Employment to PR is that the "C" (Conditional stay) changes to "A" (right of Abode), or, in certain cases, "U" (Unconditional stay).

P for permanent? perhaps.. well PDLM says "The letter at the beginning of the HKID number normally has no meaning at all: it's just part of the number". I got mine today with a letter R. For a year of applying for dependant visa, because of our case. Now.. I need to find a job.. lolz.. i'll post another topic on getting a job so that I have idea about my chances..

NO! P is not for Permanent - my (and KIA's) HKID numbers started with P when we first arrived on Employment Visas.

Frankly I suspect if it tells you anything, it tells you roughly when the person first got their HKID card. Currently they are on R. Each letter accommodates in principle 1 million new ID card holders (minus some sequences which I guess they don't issue, like 444444) so at a rough guess each letter would last a few years.

PDLM : was looking at the ID card numbers on the admission form or something I filled up for my kid's birth cert.

So she didn't have access to the rest of the symbols and neither did she look at the physical ID cards.

OK, but if my theory is correct then knowing your approximate ages she could make a pretty good guess if your wife's HKID starts with G or thereabouts.

Oh well, in that case I haven't a clue what the letter indicates, if anything.
